Heat Pump Servicing in Cambridge
A yearly service protects your warranty and keeps running costs down. Use this checklist to make sure a Cambridge service covers what it should, from the outdoor coil to the cylinder.

-
Warranty condition
manufacturers commonly require an annual service to keep extended warranties valid.
-
£120–£250 typical
for a standard annual service in and around Cambridge.
-
Before the frosts
booking in late summer means the system is checked before Cambridge's frosty season begins.
Service checklist
Ask your engineer to confirm each of these. Tick them off against the service record.
-
Coil and fan cleaned
A clean coil transfers heat better and defrosts more effectively — important in a city with around 52 frosty nights a year.
-
Defrost drainage checked
Meltwater must drain away, not pool and refreeze on paths or block the base of the unit.
-
Refrigerant readings recorded
Pressures and temperatures compared with the manufacturer's specification. Refrigerant work is for F-Gas certified engineers only.
-
Magnetic filter cleaned
And system pressure and inhibitor checked.
-
Cylinder inspected for scale
Cambridge Water's chalk supply runs at around 286–295 mg/l. Scale on the coil slows hot water and wastes electricity.
-
Safety valves tested
Temperature and pressure relief valves and the expansion vessel on the cylinder.
-
Controls reviewed
Fault log read, weather compensation and schedules checked, software updated if available.
-
Efficiency compared
Today's readings set against the commissioning record, with advice on any adjustment.
Costs
A standard service in the Cambridge area typically costs £120–£250, with parts extra. Systems with a buffer tank, multiple zones or awkward access can cost a little more.
For landlords
Cambridge has a large private rented sector. If you let a home with a heat pump:
- Book the service between tenancies or arrange access well ahead.
- Keep the service record with your other property records. A heat pump needs no gas safety certificate, but its service history supports the warranty.
- Leave tenants a short note on how to run the system — a steady temperature, no turning it off and on.
Choosing who services it
Use an engineer trained on heat pumps and, ideally, on your make. Brands seen in Cambridge homes include:

Common servicing questions
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year is standard and is what most warranties ask for.
What happens if I skip a service?
Efficiency can slowly fall as coils and filters clog, and you risk losing extended warranty cover if something fails.
Is servicing different for a hybrid system?
Hybrid systems with a gas boiler need the boiler serviced and gas-safety checked too. Most Cambridge installations are heat pump only.
Does chalk water damage heat pumps?
It doesn't harm the heat pump itself, which runs on a sealed circuit, but it scales the hot water cylinder's coil. A scale reducer and regular checks help.
Can the service be done in winter?
Yes, though booking before the heating season avoids the busiest time and catches problems early.
